When should you use elastomeric paints?

Elastomeric is a thick high fill paint. Very flexiable and completely waterproof which also is available in most every brand and color. Recently though painters have been realizing the expanded uses and, paint manufactures have been providing us with new products. That said there are many great uses for this paint. Below is some general information and links to more information.

OLD T1-11, or Plywood
Best choice!

One of the best applications of elastomeric paint is on old cracked up T1-11. Although there is no reason not to use elastomeric on new surfaces.
Discolored Stucco
Priming not necessary in some cases!
Weathered Wood
Fill small cracks and holes
Industrial Buildings
Long lasting, Durable, Guaranteed
Sheds, Well & Boat Houses
Waterproof

Some things to consider.

There are reasons not to use these products. Since these are such thick paints they really don't have a use inside the house. Smooth surfaces such as a interior trim, sheatrock, or smooth wood do not benefit much from elastomeric paint and usually is adequately protected with your average top quality latex paint. Some brands of elastomeric have a limited color selection but generally Pittsburgh Timeless can be custom mixed to ANY color.

Frequently Asked Questions?

  • Is spraying the only way to apply elastomeric?
    • You may brush and roll elastomeric. Although I do not advise this because it is very hard to achieve the proper thickness (7 mils.) when applied with a roller and brush. I do recommend back rolling elastomeric on any rough surfaces. Back rolling is the process of spraying paint on a surface while a second person follows close behind with a roller. This helps to work the paint in to small cracks and you will get better long term adhesion.

  • How many coats should I use?
    • Benjamin Moore only requires one coat to achieve exceptional waterproofing and protection. Usually I will recommend using 2 coats, this will only make it more durable. In a 2 coat situation a Flat sheen should be used for the first coat. Then finished with a second coat in the appropriate sheen.

  • Is Elastomeric available in all sheens?
    • You can find elastomeric in every sheen from Flat - Gloss, Done Right usually recommends that you use satin for most Applications. This will give you a nice durable finish, that will not be to shiny for most people.

  • Is this paint to thick and will my house look like it has a plastic candy shell?
    • In most cases you can not tell the difference between elastomeric and your typical high quality Latex house paint. This seems to be the biggest worry for most people. Don't worry though on any rough surface that is cracked up the finish appearance will not appear any different than average house paint if not better.

  • Is this paint going to cost more?
    • Yes, an elastomeric paint job will cost you more. The benefit is superior-durability and, an even longer lasting finish then your typical high quality house paint.
  • Why didn't other contractors mention this product to me?
    • Unfortunately a lot of professional contractors haven't even heard of elastomeric. The contractors that have knowledge in this area usually reserve this paint for their industrial customers.
  • Where can I buy a Good Elastomeric Paint?
    • Large stores like Home Depot and Lowes do not sell these paints. The best place to find people knowledge about Elastomeric or less specific "paint", is at a local Paint store.
